got a new exhaust system today
Finally bit the bullet and went down to Mufflex. (130 mile rountrip, but well worth it). Replaced pipes from the headers back, and reused my flowmaster 50s. H pipe went in at about the midpoint of the system. No more droopy pipes, tips blown off by backfires, popping on deceleration, and a host of other annoying problems I was plagued with by doing my own work. These guys do a great job. I took a bunch of pics - may post later. :) MJ

pics......
BEFORE - note funny clamped tips and sagging mufflers and pipes.. :(
BEFORE #2... more of the same
up on the lift - looking at the old system:
old stuff comes off easy with a little heat
underside is nekkid now........
headers stayed on...
I had to wait for them to finish putting a 3" system on this 62 Impala 409 :)
stock-style 68 tips were cut off and welded to the muffler (the 2" portion was cut off, keeping diameter at 2.5") That is a new Nissan Z in the background, having some work done on it's Titanium aftermarket exhaust.
Denny is carefully lining up the tips....
almost done....
When they finished I was in a hurry to beat rush hour traffic. Tips now look stock and you can't see the mufflers from the sides - they are nicely tucked up. :) MJ

Re: got a new exhaust system today (Turbo-Jet)
I almost forgot about the flexpipe connecting headers to rear pipes! :bb That was probably my main incentive for doing this! As bad as everything else was, I could have kept on messing with it forever, but the flex had to go!
Also forgot to mention how they made the Flowmaster 50s fit. I knew they were a little too big. They simply cut off both protruding ends flush to the muffler and weld the pipes (and tips) directly to tne muffler.
The headers are great. (I have had them on for a year now) They don't add as much noticeable power as I had hoped (They add measureable power, ie 1.5 - 2 mph in the 1/4 mile) but a big unexpected benefit is the bigblock runs cooler with the header! :)

How do you like your flowmasters? Do you get alot of noise on the inside of the car while driving? I haven't decided on what mufflers on going to put on my 72.

MJ,
How do you like the sound of the Flowmaster 50's? A buddy of mine just put a set of Flowmaster 40's on his small block Camaro and they sound great! The Flowmaster rep I talked to thought the 40's might be a bit too loud for the Vette due to resonance in the passenger compartment. He said the fiberglass floor boards weren't as good as steel floors at cancelling the resonance.
Nice photos by the way!! That shop did some nice work! They're definitely not a hack muffler shop like so many I've dealt with in the past.

Re: got a new exhaust system today (blackbeauty74)
What kind of headers do you have and how much did they cost?
this is the uncoated price from Summit -
HOK-2123 Chevrolet: 1965-74 396-502 Corvette, black painted, Super Competition headers (See Product Guide) Tomorrow $379.95
Here is the part with the Hooker coating, but I have heard of problems with the Hooker coating and the Jet Hot coating is supposed to be better....
HOK-2123-1 Chevrolet: 1965-74 396-502 Corvette, ceramic coated, Super Competition headers (See Product Guide) Tomorrow $559.95
