Default 5 speed from 80s Camaro/Firebird

I know this is probaby in the archives, but I did a few searches and came up empty. If I am going from an automatic to a stick on my 72 vert and get a hold of a 5sp from a camaro/firebird, will it bolt right up? Anyone else done this one. I know others have thrown in the mustang or tremecs, or dropped $3k on the keisler package, but I hate to spend that much because I'll never recoup that if I sell the car when the perfect 69 427 comes along.

They will work but keep in mind they are not that strong. In the 80's GM offered the 5speed ONLY with the 305ci and 350 ONLY came w/ the 700R4. The 5speed is rated at 300lbs of tq, and GM found the 245hp/345tq 350ci would crack the housing under load.

Just something to think about.

Corey that is misinformation, the bellhousing is not the weak link. I have done a lot of research on it and found that some guys can gets years and many trips to the drag strip out of them while others can frag em just backing out the drive way. They seem to be a weaker trans than the muncie and t-10. Tend to hear that 3rd gear is the weak link and goes most often. I am probably going to install one in my vette knowing I won't be able to beat it until I upgrade the internals. Or I might beat so I need new internals just to see what it can take. :jester

BTW if you are interested in doing the swap you need to find the stronger version in the late 80's early 90's f-bodys know to as the 'World Class T-5' or W/C T-5.

A friend of mine did it, he had to make a few mods though. He had the T5 rebuilt with harder gears and other goodies inside to compensate for his 400HP engine. He also had to modify his tranny mounts, shorten his driveshaft and compensate for the shifter being at a different angle. Check it out: www.5speeds.com

Fevre, no problem. I'm NOT an expert on GM 5 speeds nor will I ever claim to be. :D I was just repeating why GM claimed to not offer the 5speeds w/ the 350ci in the 80's (3rd Gen ) F-body's.

Far, far weaker than the Muncie or T-10. The first gen T-5 is rated at only 285 fl/lb capacity. It also has durability issues in the blockers, rings, and thrust washers.

The trans you're considering is suitable in a restoration or as a boat anchor.
