Default Wheel Hop????

Hello

I took my new Z to the track this weekend and had some of the worst wheel hop I have ever seen. First and second gear nothing but wheel hop. Now I have another race this weekend. I need to do everything I can to get rid of this.

What I know so far is running with 295x35x19 is no GOOD
Plus I think I have my car lowered to much so we are going to raise it up a little. I plan on running 17" DR this weekend but is there anything else I can do to get rid of the wicked hop

Thanks

I have a 96 automatic.. but use to run a Camaro 6 speed.. I think by un-lowering it... and go to the largest sidewall you can get (16") would be best.. it will help a lot.. Also until you get it sorted out.. try to avoid wheel spin.. lower the launch RPM

Short sidewalls such as 18" or 19" only will add to the problem..

You got a few days to learn how to slip that clutch a little bit or get spanked.

The larger the wheel dia. the shorter the tire sidewall the less deflection you have and deflection is good. The hard sidewalls have no give that can lead to wheel hop.

Maybe if they knew anything the wouldn't be trying to race a 6m. Start with tires and work from there.

Most people that run their Corvette at the track do it as an after thought, I don't know many that went to a dealer and said I want to buy this Z06 to drag race. Most buy them because they are fast, good performing car.
So after they buy them thay want to go to the strip and for the average non racer a 6m car can be a very hard car to get down the track in stock form but one you start to mod them it get even worse.
I think you will find many who start out with 6m car and really want to race, not just run down the track for a ET will eventually buy an A4 car, ie Edgar, Mr. Mojo, and that will elliminate about 80% of you traction problems and poor 60' times.

So, that doesn't mean that "they don't know anything." I purchased my Z with the intention of racing it. I know many of my friends have done the same (guys trading up and newbs alike). I don't know, maybe I'm in the minority. At the risk of sounding arrogant (which I'm far from) I'd say that I can hang quite well with most A4s running at E-town or Atco. I've wheeled a stick to an 11.37 e.t. and 1.47 60' with a couple of bolt-ons. And I've never considered an A4 conversion even though with my new twin turbo setup I may have problems keeping the drivetrain together.

I'm not the type to take things personally but a comment like that may rub other people the wrong way.

Wheel hop occurs when you over power available traction and then stay on the throttle.

To prevent wheel hop, you can do several things:

(1) If the rears break traction substantially, lighten up on the throttle until traction is regained. This means on launch and the shifts.

(2) Refrain from power shifting to 2d and 3d. Instead ease the throttle on those shifts.

(3) Reduce rear tire pressure, in stock F1SCs to say 24-28.

(4) Do a full smoky burnout to heat the stock rear tires.

(5) OR run drag radials (about 18 psi), heated by a full burn out.

The tendancy to hop is inherent in the Z06; but it is easy to avoid by observing the guidance above.

For some thoughts on burn out and other launch procedures, you might wish to read my write up on Z06 Launch Techniques, at the link in my signature.

What do you know ... me too! (Except I have a 'vert.)
And, coincidentally, here's an LPE-prepped Z06 with Magnuson supercharger - CONVERTED TO AN A4. He goes red on me, but take a look at the boards at the big end. (8 MB)

We ARE talking about racing. I think my numbers are respectable (and consistent) but I don't think they are BIG numbers in the grand scheme of things. Low 9s in our "street-legal" Corvette world are big numbers, in my opinion.

Anyway, I'm not here to get into a pi$$ing contest with anyone. I just thought I'd politely point out that your comment may rub m6/Z06 people the wrong way and that you don't necessarily need an A4 to be competitive in drag racing, is all.

See ya at the track.

Paul, you have lost sight of this topic, It's not about your racing ability with a 6m, it's about WHEEL HOP, and now all those post on the Z06 forum, If 1/2 of those guys had your set up they would not have WHEEL HOP. They are trying to run a 6m car on rock hard tires. What did you 60' on street tires 1.9/2.0????

Amen brother. I had an 2001 A4 that I raced for three years. . I wanted to do more than just point the car in a straight line and hit the gas. So I stepped up to a Z06 which is a great car on the most tracks. I know the 6-spd are not great for the drag racing but I like a challenge. I was just asking the questions of the guys who have the same problem and what they have done to overcome it.
