Any tirick to installing parking brake pads?
I'm having a heck of a time installing a set of parking break pads on a '76. Does the pin come from the back (that's what I'm trying at this point) or does it come from the front? It's just difficult trying to work the spring through the hole in the hub. Any tricks I'm overlooking??

Use some dental floss to tie the springs after you compress them, get an old flat blade screwdriver and make the Special tool by slotting the end with a die grinder so it can be used as a fork and puller for the springs. Look in a vette catalog to see what I'm referring to. Use some 5 minute epoxy or RTV to hold the pins in place. Use SS hardware but not SS shoes. Take your time and you'll get it.

I lay the brakes on the ground, connect the star wheel and lower spring. Then I "open" up this assembly and put it up & over the spindle. Then, I do the spring washer clips, then all you have left is the top spring. I put the top spring in the hole on the shoe towards the front of the car and then use a similar tool Gary mentioned to get the top spring in the last hole in the rearward shoe. Piece 'O Cake :lolg:

Well I wws told not to use them, the new dust sheilds have a sticker saying not to use them, so........I used them!! This was a couple of years ago and I bought a set of SS shoes from a very well known SS brake company so I thought they were ok. The problem I had was they didn't fit under the flange. the slots were not deep enough. I had to mill them deeper and turn the star wheel face to get everything to fit. I have used stock shoes and didn't have any install issues at all. I don't think my problem was the reason for the sticker though.

Thanks for the info. I bought my SS parking brake hardware and shoes many years ago and never had a problem. I can't remember who I bought it from but it was one of the very large suppliers. Anyway, the shoes need replacing now and I wanted to buy SS again but now I am worried they won't fit right. Oh well.
