Tilt steering collum loose?
The tilt feature of my steering collum on my 80 has and inch of play when it locked in position. I sure I'm going to regret this, but how do I fix it?

As I've learned, this seems to be fairly common. Check out .corvettefaq.com, member Jim Shea turned me on to this site. VERY informative. Have fun!!!

Mine has about an inch of play too. I was told not to F@ck with it cause the bearing would fall out of the other end & you would be up the creek without a paddle. I still don't wanna pay $450 for a used column so I live with it. Mine has a crack in the metal I can see when I take the wheel, horn & turn signal off & look down it.

The following two links will give you some quick checks to determine the source of the looseness. You may need to download further papers at http://www.corvettefaq.com once you get a better handle on the problem.

Also, don't forget that additional help is only an eMail or a Corvette Forum post away.
Good luck,

Re: Tilt steering collum loose?
You need to remove the column from the car to do any work on it. That part is realtively easy. Once the column is out and on a clean bench you will be able to rebuild it by following the links that Jim Shea posted above. And if you get to something that you have a question on post it here. Those of us who have had them apart will try to help, Jim Shea will give you the definitive answer.......when it comes to columns Jim is the man. :seeya
