Manual into an Auto??
hey, could someone give me some information about swaping possibly a T-56 int my 72? I have an auo in it right now, and it will have to be built regaurdless and would it really be that much more to swap in a t-56 or a 4speed or a 5 sopeed? I know i will need the clutch, slave cyinder, trans and probably other crap. The engine going into the car wil be the ZZ383 most likely unless i build something betyter. It may be on nitrous at some point too.. I want to figure this out before i rebuild the rear and get into that.. help is really apreciated.

There are numerous transmission swap topics in archives. There is also a T-56 swap topic in the tech tips section. Right now I'm in the middle of a ROD swap in my 81. Hope to get it finished in a week or so. Good Luck!

Re: Manual into an Auto?? (bigblockbob)
We just went through this on my sons 79. The t-56 shifter sits back a couple of inches farther than a standard four speed or after market 5-6 spd's. So be ready to lengthen the floor opening and make you own console cover. Also if you are referring to the smaller 5 spd that can be found in 305 camaro's and not the one that is bigger and is in the 350 and newer camaro's. The smaller tranny is slightly tilted off to the right. It will bolt up to the standard bell housing. But the shifter will be tilted slightly. The 305 bell housing will limit your clutch/pressure plate options. But allow the proper correction in shifter pointing upwards. Myrecommendation is to spend the extra money and get a good after market one that fits. The hardest part will be finding the clutch linkage/bars for the change over. And everybody seems to feel thiers is worth to moon. Mike

There's is an article in the July 2004 issue of Vette magazine on swapping an auto trans to T56 in a 79'. They make it sound easy!

Bigblockbob,
I have a Richmond 6-speed in a '74 big block car that now has a 540.
It used to be auto.
Richmond 6 is the way to go!! Easy bolt on to a auto car.
There is one for sale in the C3 parts section for 2200.....you may get him down to 2k. It is a good price for that transmission and you'll save a lot of cursing and extra $$$$ on mods to make another gearbox fit!!!
