Default Parking Brake Shoe Replacement Problem 72 Vette

Do you have to remove the rear axel to replace the parking brake shoes? I've drilled out the rivets and removed the roter, but I'm having a tough time removing the shoes. Any advice? :banghead:

No it can be done with the axle in place. It is not the easiest thing to get access to but it can be done.

You need decent needlenose pliers, a medium screwdriver ... and patience.

First, use the needlenose pliers to remove the (bottom) adjuster spring.
Next, spread the shoes and get the adjuster out the bottom (tilt one end up).
Next, line up the larger hole in the spindle with the cup-retainer in the middle
of the shoe. Put the needlenose pliers through the hole and hold the end of
the retainer pin (keep it from rotating). Going in between the spindle and shoe,
use the screwdriver to depress the cup and spin it 90 degrees. Repeat for the
cup retainer on the other side. Last, remove the top spring. You're done.

It's actually fairly easy once you get the right tools and technique.

Reassembly will cause you to question the GM design engineer's sanity.

Do a search on "Parking Brakes" in the Archives, there's tips and links that really help. Could be one of the most challenging tasks we "do it yourselfers" face. Lastly, don't try to remove the rear most brake pad retainer pin, it's held in place by the spindle, so it shouldn't come out, but if it does, you can't reinstall it without removing the spindle/dust shield.

Good luck, and a few brews, and deep breaths, will make this task more enjoyable...

Thanks to all, I got the new shoes installed, a new cable, and the parking brakes works like a charm. It was a pain getting the retainer pins ocked into the cup though. I used a small socket and held the pin from the back side with small needle nose. It took some time, but its all done!
