Default Is Ignition timing related to MPG?

the prices here in vancouver have rose to $.93/L and its not even summer! My cars timing is now at 5 degrees i think and spec calls for 8 degrees. Should i set the timing up to 8 or higher or will it decrease my MPG.

Advancing the timing improves mileage and performance upto the point of pinging.

alrite then, well the car was running at 12* before and i was only using 87 octane and that didnt cause any pinging so i guess im gonna go increase the timing.

thanks zwede

Timing definitely impacts mpg. The reason for vacuum advance is to improve mileage. Make sure your vacuum advance is working properly.
