I hear a clunk as I am coming to a stop.
every time as i slow down, jsut before coming to a stop theres a clunk. ITs quiet faint, and really have to listen for it. It's been doing this for a long time. I checked my brakes, calipers are tight, could it be transmission? (I can't tell where the sound is coming from), definitely not the rear of the vehicle though. ideas?

Its your head hitting the steering wheel :jester
Might want to have the tranny looked at. U-Joints can also be suspects.

Seriously ..... do you have a socket or something (lug nut socket) rolling around in the glove box or storage area? ....... I know that sounds stupid but it's worth checking before all the other stuff ........

how about the differential bushing? Just replaced mine ..there was nothing left of it It was the top one that you cant see but if you feel around with you fingers you can feel some of the rubber desintegrated

Also dont forget to look under the storage area where the flat tire jack is. I has something in there that was causing a noise..

it is definitely coming from the front of the vehicle, most of the time the clunking is not from my head hitting the steering wheel or the windshield. I will check out the control arms, but I feel it something to do with the drive train, since it happens on deceleration.
I think its the nut holding the steering wheel.

I have a automatic Jeep that does the same thing, a faint clunk as the transmission downshifts to first gear. Sometimes it will not do it until after you stop and let off the brake to inch forward. Mine is for sure in the transmission, sounds similar to what you describe. If so I would check the tranny...just my 2 noncents worth.

It happens on braking only, but just about at stop, meaning, if I don't apply the binders, it won't do it, becuase it won't stop. I think your on to something that it does it on a downshift. I will try leaving it in first geat (automatic Trans) get up to a good speed, below redline obvisouly, and then come to a stop see if it does it, if not, obvisouly the sound is the downshift to 1st in the tranny.
