OT...going to look at a 454 Chevelle
I am going this evening to check out what I am told is a 454 Chevelle. It has been sitting in the same spot for at least 10 years. Assuming that it is a real 454 SS car, what kind of cash do you think a project car should be worth?

Depends on year and options, etc.
I'd post it here as well --> http://www.chevelles.com/cgi-bin/forum/ultimatebb.cgi

Might help you to know that fully documented pristine condition original SS 454 Chevelles can be had for mid 20's. Some guys are asking the world...but that's true for any car. A co-worker of mine bought a show quality fully documented 1970 SS-454 last year for 25K. Be very carefull..there are TONS of SS imposters out there. It's very easy to do so CHECK YOUR NUMBERS....
Good Luck

I am told that the car is a 70 454. The car has been sitting in the same spot for a long time so I am not too worried about an imposter. I haven't seen the car yet so I don't know if it's an LS-6, LS-5, or some old Mlibuwith a truck motor. This is one of those cars you hear about from a guy who knows a guy who heard the car was for sale. I am going to take the evening to track the car down and see what it really is.

This sounds all too familiar. A friend of mine looked at one in MD just as you describe... he said it was in dire straits and the guy would not take less than 8K for it. A bit much for a car that is in need of that much work! I love those cars.. I had one... wish I still had it.. same as all the others I have had..  .... Good luck!

fyi...SS clones have been slipping into the market for at least 20 years. I built 2 myself in 1983 and 1985; a 1968 396 and 1970 454 (both were originally Malibu's). Even then, boxed lower control arms, 1.25" sway bars, repro broadcast sheets/window stickers (typed with circa 70's IBM selectomatic typewriter and aged with tea stains and seat spring rust), repro protectoplates/tape (with aged glue) and restamped motors / tranny's were the order of the day. The only true method of documenting these old Chevy's is an unbroken chain of ownership/registration.

You need to first make sure that it is a true Chevelle SS 454. I went out with my father to look at a supposed '71 Chevelle. The guy was trying to pass it off as a 1971 Chevelle SS 454. I quickly realized that this was not the case. There are a few easy ways to determine if it's a true SS car. The easiest in my opinion is the dash. Malibus had the long rectangular speedometer, whereas the SS package had the individual circular guage pods. Another easy ticket is the rear end, Chevelles came with 12 bolt rear ends and Malibus came with 10 bolts. I wouldn't want to see you over pay on a Malibu that's made to look like a Chevelle SS.

yup...gauges, 12 bolts, M21's ... all swapped around like razors at a drag queen convention as I remember. Chevy started stamping the engine/trans code into the VIN in 1972. Amazing how few SS this, Z28 that are around AFTER 1971 :D
