How do you remove brake sheilds?
I just purchased all four brake shields for my 77. The front was easy to replace, but I have know idea on how to replace the back. The trailing arms are out of the car. Any ideas?
Thanks

You have to dis-assemble the rear spindle. The spindle flange prevents replacement of the shield. If you're going to press off the bearings, plan on replacing them.

There is a whole procdure on it the GM service manual and here in the archives,if they are open?
It involves pressing off the bearings and that requires about 20 ton of force and some special tools. The bearing end-play will need to be set between .001-.002".
This is a very general outline,if you can't find more info then let me know and I'll go over the whole process with you.

Sounds like a lot of work to replace the brake sheilds. Everything is out of the car, but I'll have to take it somewhere to get it pressed out.

It is a lot of work if you don't have the tools. You have to be careful of whoever presses the spindle off doesn't break anything.

Just maybe unless you are really motivated and have the tools or the buddies - a wire wheel on the drill, masking and respray might be in order.

May need to go that route. The bad thing is that I just had everything powder coating and would like to be consistent.
Again thanks for the info..

You went this far ... so have them rebuilt.
I did my own, but you need some specialty tools - at least a hydraulic press,
a bearing separator, dial indicator/magnetic base, bearing packer, and a
setup tool or old spindle modified to be a setup tool.
The bearing/seals themselves are actually quite cheap. I paid $30 a wheel.
Talk to Dan (VanSteel) and see how much for them to do just the bearings.
Don't forget to send your powder coated shields.

Go to this site (www.FastCorvette.com) for info. on how to rebuild the rear spindles. They sale the necessary parts to complete this work. Best of all they offer the use of the speciality tools required free of charge. You just put up a refundable deposit for the value of the tools. You will still need a dial indicator with magnetic base and a press to remove the old bearings. :steering: :auto:

Now what I've heard is that the brake shields do the job of shielding, but they do another thing. They hold the heat in. I figure I will just remove mine if I ever get to the stage where they could be removed because I was doing something else
