PICS - New Radio Installed
Okay, I finally found my USB cord for my digital camera so I can post some pics of my install for my new head unit in my '70 convertible. Here's some background from my original post:
"Over the weekend I installed a new head unit in my 1970...a Sony CDX-FX7700. It's a real nice radio and I love having an MP3 player in my car (finally). Anyway, I used a dremel with the reinforced fiber wheel to cut the steel center bezel. I was able to cut the center console with the dremel in about 2 hours (this includes sanding and grinding to smooth it out). Anyone thinking about doing this in the future I would definitely recommend using a dremel with the reinforced fiber wheels (do not use the heavy duty cutter wheels...they wear down way too fast). I then painted the American International radio faceplate (using MarHydes Black Satin) to match the rest of the console (and cut the faceplate using the template for a DIN-sized head unit). Anyway, it came out real nice and sounds GREAT! I was actually surprised how easy it was and how well it turned out."

Looks good. I was actually thinking of using one of those DIN adapter plates to make a radio delete plate. How much did it cost you?

Re: PICS - New Radio Installed (70 LS1)
Thanks. It was pretty cheap (it's just plastic), if I remember correctly it was only around $20.00 (shipping was a couple of $$ more). The part number is FP-306 from http://www.aius.net. You have to cut the DIN faceplate, but it's pretty simple since it's only plastic. Plus, it's already pre-scored so you just have to follow the scoring.

Looks good. I did the same thing a year or so ago. Same plate but I put in a Kenwood deck with the rotating face so that when I turn the car off, the face flips and it looks like a radio delete plate (well, kinda).

Motor City Vette, Your installation looks very clean. I just put an MP3 player in my 68 over the weekend, l couldn't find a faceplate that fits as well as the one you used. Can you check where you purchased it again. I can't find the faceplate on the website you posted.

Don't mean to be negative, but to me a modern deck like that just does not look right in an old fashon dash, but that is just me.

I disagree, I think it looks great. The stock system sucks.
Click on Domestic (Chevrolet) then down to Corvette and FP-306, then installation kits. The plate is listed here at the bottom of page 11.

Re: PICS - New Radio Installed (Motor City Vette)
that looks great!
i ahve a Premier DEH-650 sitting on my dresser waiting to be installed. i have yet to decide to cut up the original bezel or find a replacement and cut that one up...
how does the adapter plate fit to the modified bezel? it looks like 1 pc, but it is hard to judge from photos.
edit: i think i see from their catalog. the sides of the plate are contoured to fit the curve of the factory shape. is this correct? how is the fit?

Re: PICS - New Radio Installed (SAMMAN)
Samman, thanks. The faceplate is from American International. When you go to their website http://www.aius.net you'll be able to find the part by selecting Chevrolet from the pulldown menu (it doesn't show you a picture). You can also call them at 800-336-6500.
Ooops...I just went back and checked my original post and I accidently transposed the URL...I'll edit the post so it shows the correct URL (www.aius.net). Sorry for any confusion!

Re: PICS - New Radio Installed (Turbo-Jet)
Turbo-Jet, the sides of the faceplate do curve to fit the original console...it actually fits the console pretty good. the texture of the plastic is slightly different than the texture on the center console, but with a new DIN head unit you're not really going for stock-looking anyways. The rest of my interior is pretty well stock (except for the 8 ball shifter and the mahogany steering wheel) and it actually gives it that "hot rod" look without all the other "hot rod" customization.

Re: PICS - New Radio Installed (Motor City Vette)
Looks really nice.... I am about to do the same thing to my 76. My 88 suburban died recently (badly cracked heads / mass water in the oil with run time) and is donating its newly installed sound system to my vette, As well as its newly rebuilt 700R4 tranny. I kinda hate to cut the dash up... but its totally worth the sound and look of modern stereo / cd / mp3. What did you do for speakers... and where did you mount them? I haven't done a thorough inspection yet... so I'm not sure where I am putting mine.
Again... nice job,
Loren
