Tune Up Parts Questions
I'm looking to tune her up and update a few things along the way. :D
What I'm looking at are 3 things in the Summit catalog.
Pertronix Flame-Thrower Tune up kit and the Proform HEI Tune Up kit.
Both have cap, rotor, 50000v coil, module, adjustable vacuum advance, hipo springs and advance weights. Then finally the Moroso HEI Kit. The Moroso HEI Kit doesn't have the module, vacuum advance or springs and weights and it is $100. The Pertronix is $120 and the Proform is $80. Any experience with any of these?
Then I was thinking about the Moroso Blue Max 8mm wires, regardless.
Any thoughts on these?
Plugs?
I don't want to spend a fortune, just get good quality parts that are an improvement over stock.
My car is basically a Stock L-82 with Holley 650dp, and emissions removed.
Headers and side pipes are in it's near future as is an aftermarket intake.
Haven't decided yet about heads and cam.
Thanks, Mike.

all sound good to me, coil and modual need to match to help performace, I've
read it for years and many place's so i don't have any proof to disbelieve it
i'm puting 2 HEI's together with ACCEL parts... got good price on and have'nt
had any problems with them over the years

Re: Tune Up Parts Questions (79-L-82)
The HEI ignition system is one of the few things that came out of GM that requires little or no improvement! :yesnod: Just because people sell "performance" parts for a given component doesn't mean they'll provide any improvement.
The 50KV coil will only burn up your spark plugs faster. And don't use anything but a genuine GM module. The others fail. Use the money to buy a really good set of wires and a box of AC Delco Rapidfire spark plugs. And get a $4.50 ignition mechanical advance kit. But don't mess with that vacuum advance can in the '79 L82 if you don't need to (ask me how I know). Also, a Blue Streak cap and rotor wouldn't hurt.
Finally, download Lars timing paper from http://www.corvettefaq.com (By the way, a lot of this is based on Lars' advice and knowledge -- after all, he personally tuned my car!)
There...that should save you a few $$$ to spend elsewhere.

Re: Tune Up Parts Questions (79-L-82)
First off, dig up a vacuum gauge and check your vacuum at idle. Mine runs around 14-15 lbs. I don't know if it's a stock cam or not (it IS lumpy, however). The only vacuum can that would work right was the one already on the car. It has a very low threshold. When we tried to put a "normal" unit on there, the levels were too high and it didn't kick in where it should have. So I guess I'm saying don't mess with it if it ain't broke.
You also should dig up a timing light and check your vac and mech advances are both working. And then follow Lars timing procedures to set your total timing to 36 degrees @ 3000 rpm (with vac advance disconnect). Initial timing don't mean squat.

How long you had that 650dp on that stock L82? I'd be detuning that first!
While replacing cap/rotor look over the springs and advance weights. The weights should move freely and the bushings for these weights must be in good shape. Alot of HEI "problems" were associated to the weights needing repair. Give the pick-up coil wires (2) a glance also, because with age they get brittle. This is the RPM signal the module is looking for and is another trouble item.
Being everything else is stock you really don't need the extra dwell time of a Hi-Perf module with street driving.
Have fun!

Re: Tune Up Parts Questions (GasketDude)
Just bought the car a month ago. The 650 was on it already.
I've done nothing to modify the car yet.
The car has been sitting for years.
I've removed the weights and cleaned them up as they were rusty and not moving freely. They are now.
The carb had a problem with the needle and seat in the accelerator pump being gummed up. I cleaned that up and it is OK now.
The thing would barely run prior to this. Now it runs, but sputters and hesitates at part throttle even cruising. full throttle is OK and idle is good.
Revs good when sitting still.
