When I step on the gas from idle, the RPMs climb a bit then quickly fall, like the car is going to stall out- but continues running. If I slowly apply pressue to the gas pedal, the RPMs appear to climb fine. It has been also tough starting while cold, which has never happened before. It's got a fairly new starter and battery.

Any suggestions?

What carb are you running? Have you recently made any changes to your carb or ignition system?

It's a rebuilt Q-jet. I did put in some steel braided Taylor plug wires, that is the only change I made.

I don't think so...I replaced them one at a time, and it ran great for a couple of days before this started. I noticed a bit of slugishnees around 2400-2800 rpms, but other than that nothing...

Are the secondaries on the carb supposed to be easy to open/close by hand, or should there be a bit of resistance to them?

IF they're vacuum operated then they'll open easy by hand. It's the downward force of the increase air velocity which causes them to open.

I'm thinking that your getting too much air & not enough fuel when you stomp on it causing a 'severe' hesitation and near-stall situation.

humm- then the carb isn't getting enough fuel then, you think? It wouldn't be a fuel pump problem?

My guess as well.

The condition you described is precisely what the accelerator pump is meant to counteract. Carb can't react fast enough to sudden fuel demand when the pedal is stabbed hence the accel. pump.
