Default Factory antenna cable

Hi group. I'm trying to return to the thrilling days of a fixed radio antenna on my 73 convertible. The previous owner installed a nice Kenwood radio with a remote CD changer, and I really like it. But I also don't care for the power antenna look. I like the fixed mast that went with the original radio. Can I combine the two? I've bought the kit with all the hardware, ground plate, etc. and have installed it. But how can I splice the old power antenna cable to the new fixed mast antenna cable? They are roughly the same diameter, but the inner core wire is much thicker on the one I'm installing now. Any ideas? The radio shack guys were not much help, but I really can't blame them. It's probably not one of their most frequently asked questions. Thanks for any ideas.
