Differential Help please
I have to replace the differential on my '82 because it won't come close to holding the hp, I need it to, some one told me to get it from Tom's Rear Ends, but honestly I know nothing about differential’s other then what posi track is. Could someone explain to me what I will basically need, and any options you may think I need, also can you recommend gears. I will be running close to 1200 hp if that helps.

Thanks,
Bill

At 1200 HP about the only thing that will hold up is a solid axle. I agree a 9 inch Ford would be the best. Toms has something that will hold up but hold on to your wallet. It is expensive.

Ford 9 inch with a spool is the only way to go with that kind of horsepower... You'll also need 40 spline axles... I'm going to have a Ford 9 inch installed on my '68 and I will be running a detroit locker differential... I don't know if a Detroit Locker will be able to handle 1200 HP with slicks... A spool will handle it easily.. but reduces drivability!!
There's no posi that I'm aware of that would hold up to 1200 Horsepower...

Re: Differential Help please (wgc_3)
Also this company claims that their half shafts, and their drive shaft can hold it, so there has to be a differential that can? Or am I still wrong, adding a 9" sounds like more of a pain with alot of welding, then just replacing all the parts, but I think if there was a picture then maybe it might help if anyone has one.

What are you going to do with this car. Drive it on the street or is it a race car primarly. I don't know the rules off the top of my head but the IRS setup is not allowed below a certain ET. You have to go to a solid rear. If the car is street driven with some drag strip the IRS is going to be the weak link but a little more streetable.
