Default What size wire for alternator "sensing" wire?

Some time ago I picked up a spare connector for my alternator (old one was cracked) and it had a pair of roughly 16 or 14 gauge wires already in it. I've been using that setup for awhile and it's been working fine but the stock setup used a 10 gauge wire up there for the sensing wire. 10 gauge!?!? Seems like freakin overkill to me considering there shouldn't be much current on that wire. Anyhow, I'm re-wiring the alternator completely and want to know if I should run 10 gauge or if it's safe to step down to 14 or 16.

Any thoughts?
