which line is the cooler return line on th400 trans?
getting ready to install A 400 turbo in my car,but I am wondering which line is the return line coming back to the trans from the cooler on a 400 turbo?? is it the upper or lower fitting on the trans case?? :confused:

I am pretty sure it is the bottom line. The lower line connects to the bottom of the radiator and the upper line conects to the top. However it doesn't matter unless you are adding a filter which has a flow direction.

I just looked in my "How to work with and modify the Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 Transmission" book. It says that the top line is the return line.

I've found that the return line is the one that doesn't puke fluid when you forget to connect them back up. Sorry, couldn't resist. :D

is there any definate answer, if is is the upper or lower is the return line, it is critical for me to now, because i need to put a one-way valve in the return line,since the check-valve in the pump quit working .which causes all the fuild to drain out it i,f it sits for very long. if I put the oneway valve on the wrong line it will very quickly burn the trans up. it the moment I will consider tpiini 's book to be right(upper line is return). does anyone else KNOW for a fact which one it is?????? :confused:

On the transmission (TH400) the bottom line is out and the top line is the return. On the radiator the top is in and the bottom out.
In other words
The bottom transmission line runs to the top of the radiator.
The top transmission line runs to the bottom of the radiator.
In other words
The bottom transmission line runs to the top of the radiator.
The top transmission line runs to the bottom of the radiator.
