Default Gas tank removal on my 73

I have alot of debris and who know's what in my fuel tank. Does anyone have a good reference for tank removal or advice on removing the tank, or is there an easier way to remove the debris??

You don't need to remove the tank to clean it. You can remove the sender unit and then flush everything out through that big hole. You can get a stick with a rag tied to it through the fuel neck and wipe in there. Use torch...no naked flames etc

If you need a new "sock" for the sender unit now is a good time to replace it.

If we are talking RUST flakes then maybe you should pull the tank and replace it or at least re-seal it.

It would be helpful in the future to specify the year of your car. I see from your profile that it's a '73. The sending unit mounts through the bottom of the tank. Siphon out the gas then remove the spare tire tub. You should be able to get to the sending unit and remove it from below. Then you can flush the tank and clean out the debris. Get a new o-ring seal before reinstalling the sending unit and you should be good to go.

I'll be using the POR-15 sealant kit ....
I hope yours looks better than mine.
It's solid - just real nasty looking.

If you remove the tank, be careful not to pinch the fuel hose (between tank and support) when you set the tank back down. I did this once and, after filling the tank, the fuel's weight cut-off fuel to the pump. Thankfully, I was already at home when the engine shut down.

At first I thought my fuel pump had gone bad. The fuel pump was removed and tested with no problems found. Since the pump was working and no fuel was getting to the carb, I knew something must have been preventing fuel from getting to the pump. Once I looked at the tank and saw the pinched fuel hose I thought "what a dumb fk" and had to lift the tank again to move the hose.

P.S. always easier to lift or remove tank when most of the fuel has been siphoned.

Good luck with your repairs.

NHvette,

Don't let a Radiator shop boil it clean or that tank will be full of pinholes. I'd buy a tank. Just my 2 cent$. :banghead:

What he said. I pulled mine because of rust. Before I took it to the shop for a $125 boil/coat, I put a chain in the tank and ratted it around to remove the rust. It left a half dozen pinholes. For $189 you can get a new tank from ZIP. That includes a cork filler gasket, sender lock and O ring. Only takes an hour to replace.

I'd get a new tank too. That one looks like it's useful life is over.
You can find them on eBay for $150 or less.
