Installed New Head Unit
Over the weekend I installed a new head unit in my 1970...a Sony CDX-FX7700. It's a real nice radio and I love having an MP3 player in my car (finally). Anyway, I used a dremel with the reinforced fiber wheel to cut the steel center bezel. I was able to cut the center console with the dremel in about 2 hours (this includes sanding and grinding to smooth it out). Anyone thinking about doing this in the future I would definitely recommend using a dremel with the reinforced fiber wheels (do not use the heavy duty cutter wheels...they wear down way too fast). I then painted the American International radio faceplate (using MarHydes Black Satin) to match the rest of the console (and cut the faceplate using the template for a DIN-sized head unit). Anyway, it came out real nice and sounds GREAT! I was actually surprised how easy it was and how well it turned out.
I took some pictures that I'll post as soon as I can find my USB cord to my digital camera (aaarrgghhh....where did that thing go???)

Sweet,
Make sure to post those pictures,
I am looking at doing this in my 79, but want to see examples of how people have done it.
The old 8 track needs to go :D

Re: Installed New Head Unit (Todbo)
I cut my old broken gauge cluster using a jig-saw. Turned out pretty good. The original opening is a little bigger than the new DIN size radio so there is a small gap at the top of the radio. I will manage to do better the next time.
