Does anyone have a pic, or can you describe, the correct plug which belongs in the threaded hole in the block immediately under the fuel pump (I believe it is an access hole to remove/install the fuel pump push rod). The current plug is hitting the fuel pump, not allowing it to be bolted in all the way.

I believe it is a 5/16" or 3/8" pipe plug with sealer on it. If you use a standard bolt it will go too far in and hit the shaft. The hole is there so you can hold the pushrod up while installing the pump.

It's an allen head pipe plug. Got one from the machine shop that does all my work. I'll see if I have a picture somewhere

That explains alot. The previous owner was using a plug with a head on it (vs. allen head) and that is hitting the pump. I'll find an appropriate-sized allen head plug.

Actually the head does not matter, just make sure that it is pipe thread and not USS or SAE. It will come with either an allen or 4 point head. Do not forget the sealer. Rectorseal #5 works well.

Actually, there's not a lot of room there. The recessed allen head is needed to clear the pump. A regular pipe plug with a raised square will not allow the pum to sit flush against the block.

Not sure of the "official" size, but it measures 5/8" in dia.
