Default Distibutor Tach Drive

My tach cable is not broken, but I bought a new one anyway and the damn dist is not turning it! It will turn the cable when I spin the distributor counterclockwise with my hand, but won't turn the tach drive when going the correct direction. Do I just need to replace the small gear and/or could the gear on the dist shaft be bad too...I have heard that these things go out, really don't feel like spending $300+ on a new distributor.

Thanks for the reply Revetracer. Tonight I'm going to pull the dist and take out the coupler and shine a flashlight in there to see it the gear on the mainshaft is bad. If it is, I'll be taking one of those distributors off your hands. Otherwise, I'll just order a new side gear...

1971 350/270 There is a dealy at the end of the tach cable where it goes in the distributor that can be put on backwards.

Gage, if it is the mainshaft gear that is bad, new mainshafts can be had for $40 -$60 depending on the corvette vendor.

98% chance that your distibutor drive shaft tach drive gear is bad. You will need to replce the distributor shaft plus the small drive gear at the end of the cable. If you pull the distributor it will be obvious :nopity

I HATE! MSD disributors on Vettes. The money is better spent on other peformance parts. My 12.28 sec LT-1 has had it's Delco in for 12K miles and gets the job done! I guess it depends on how much money you have to spend, I use my wisely and kick butt looking stock.
