Wormshaft seal ?
Hi,
I latlely rebuilt my Steering box, but since I hadn't any seals in my actual steering box I have trouble finding where are suppose to go, could you help me?
1) Goes the wormshaft seal inside or outside the adjuster plug and how to install it?
2) Goes the pitman shaft seal inside or outside the steering gear housing and how to install it?
I heard people putting some grease instead of steering box fluid does anyone has an experience with that?
Thanks for your help,
Mike

Mike,
The seal goes into the adjuster nut. The box you have didn't have a seal? There is also a seal on the pitman shaft, a gasket under the cover and a plug that get peened over on the other end. Use some sealer on the threads of the adjuster when you assemble it.
I have a box apart now if you need any pictures, let me know.

Re: Wormshaft seal ? (mpeter)
Thanks for the help guys, I could replace the two seals. I'm not sure if I can get some steering box fluid over here, does other fluid like transmission or gear box fluid work as well, or what is the best suitable replacement steering box fluid?

Mobil 1 red sythentic automotive grease don't use oil it will leak out for sure. Fill to about 80% capacity about 11 ounces.
