Just bought a 69 Big Block
This is a non power steering car. I have excessive play in the steering box. Anyone have any ideas for a fix? Is there any adjustment procedure besides turning the screw all the way in then backing out 1.5 turns?

Congratulations on your purchase, the best place to look for help on your steering problem is at the Corvette Faq located at http://www.corvettefaq.com
Jim Shea, a Corvette Forum regular and former chief engineer with GM's Saginaw Steering Division, has many, many articles on repairing and adjusting Corvette steering gear.
Steering does seem to be the weak link in the C-3's. The steering setup is basically the same one used since 1953, lots of parts to wear and get out of adjustment.
Some guys have just ripped the whole system out and replaced it with an aftermarket rack and pinion setup from an outfit called Speed Direct, it is called Steeroids.
There is another alternative to up grade your old steering box with a kit from Corvette Steering, they have a modern Saginaw steering box with integrated power steering. It is less expensive than the Steeroids setup and closer to stock appearance.

Big block torque plenty of fun, have you checked to see if any other steering parts have play? sometimes a little in each add up to a lot. If all are tight I have screwed the adjuster down until the wheel will not return after you turn then start backing the adjuster out until the wheel starts to return after a turn . If this doesnt work steering gear will most likely have to be rebuilt or replaced.

Welcome to the club!
It seems that the weight of the big block wears out steering components rather quickly. I had to change the idler arm and tighten up the steering box right after I got mine. Makes a world of difference.

Hi
My 68 BB also has non power steering as well as non power assisted braking.
If you can't visually see any play at the links , joints , steering column rack etc, your steering box needs a rebuild.
This can be outsourced or you just purchase a rebuild kit .
Try to drive your non power steering after having it fixed before you decide to convert to power steering.
Power steering is only for parking , during normal driving it doesn't do anything except steeling the road feel.
Lot's of people convert back to non power steering to get this feeling back.
Good luck. Gunther.
