Need info on TH 400 transmission
Hi Guys:
I've been away for a while, but now I'm back. Long time no see - it's good to be back in civilization again.
At any rate, I need to write a paper on the mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical aspects (strengths and weaknesses) of the TurboHydramatic 400 transmission for a class I'm taking. Since our C3s have a lot of 400s in them, what better place to ask than here. If you have any information, or even opinions, on that I would love to hear them. If you know of any good websites with such info, I'd appreciate those, too.
TIA

I can't help much with hydraulic or mechanical. The only thing electrical on my TH400 (I think) is the wire on the driver's side to the kick-down solenoid.
Maybe your paper could address why there's two slots on the wire connector, but a single wire and only one tab on the transmission to connect it to.

You should be able to find a lot about the TH400. In stock form the only thing I was told to replace was the roller clutch with 8 elements. The early, pre-70 th400's had a better sprag setup with more elements to handle more torque. I was told a stock th400 can handle 400hp no problem and go up to 550 before doing some mods, like the 34 element sprag. a good TC,shift kit,and some minor mods and this tranny will do most anything you want in a muscle car, except offer OD

Might be for the switch pitch converter models. I converted mine to this with a modified converter and a low stall of 1800 and a high stall of 2800. It worked good.

The stock Turbo 400 is a great tranny. Will do 500HP easily. Weakness is that it takes a good 50 to 55 HP to turn it. A turbo 350 can be built to work just as hard, but with only half the horsepower drain.
