71 air cleaner question
I did a search, but was unable to reply to a "read only topic" thread.
I also have a duel snorkle on my 350.
Whats the advantage/disadvantage of changing it to a chrome open element.
Looks nicer? Better performance?
TIA

Re: 71 air cleaner question (Red Sting 70)
There is no negative performance effects from the dual snorkel air cleaner as compared to the open element LT-1 style, unless you are running in excess of 6000 rpm for an extended period of time. Demand of CFM of air flow through the carb would be restricted if the opening of the snorkels was less than the total opening of the carb primary and secondary throttle plates. Measure the square inches of the snorkel openings, then the square inches of the Qjet or Holley butterflies. Then realize how often or the length of time that you drive your car with both primaries and secondaries wide open.
The snorkels do create turbulence in the air cleaner at high flow rates (WOT at high RPM) but is reduced by the restriction of flow through the cleaner element. The turbulence was eliminated with the open element that was stock in the HP engines, designed to red line at 7K.
Isn't engineering fun?

I think most of us go with the open air cleaner because the snorkel OEM type is just plain ugly!

You could run flexable air ducting from the front of the engine compartment to both snorkles, or you could install an open element and let your enginge ingest hot air. Cold air is a proven power maker :yesnod:

Just my .02, but I think the dual snorkle looks  .
In fact, I went from an open element chrome setup BACK to the stock dual snorkle
