Cheap mufflers that sound good...
Hey folks, I need some mufflers since mine are pretty much shot, but I don't wanna get anything expensive yet, as I'm not ready to redo my complete exhaust system yet... I just want something that sounds good... A deep rumble at idle and a deep growl under throttle... Cheaper the better!

Cheap, and aggressive? Glass packs.
The shorter they are, the louder they are. The longer, the more deep tone sound they have. I dont reccomend any smaller than 18 inches. My T/A has two 24 inchers and it sounds great. Nice rumble at idle and they scream when the hammer's down.
Best of all - they cost 17 dollars each.

I always wondered what those Summit turbo mufflers sounded like. Aren't they around $14.95?? Would like to know how they compared to the $80 flowmasters. You can be our guinea pig!

Dynomax super turbos. Very cheap, great sound, no resonance. I've tried several others, and nothing compares for a driver type car.

When I needed some mufflers to last me about 6 months, I went and bought some super cheap Cherry Bomb mufflers. They were pretty loud but tolerable. I wish I had put some exhaust paint on before I put them on as they did start to show rust rather quickly.
edit: I think they were somewhere in the $10-20 range each. super cheap.

Don't laugh.. those Summit turbo's are an excellent choice for the price. I had them on my 1980 and they had a slight rumble with a little bit of a growl (not near as much as the Dynomax Super Turbos) but still they sound good. For the price, they can't be beat. Now, If all you want is loud... get glass packs! Also, keep in mind, if you are replacing the stock setup, you will need to have bends and turn downs for the basic mufflers. If you buy "direct fit", you are going to pay for it! :yesnod: :seeya

They did a test in Hot Rod or Car Craft about a year ago on cheap mufflers. It turned out that the Summit Fully Welded mufflers flowed among the best and the Summit Turbo was around mid pack or a little higher. What's to lose, they're only about $30 for a pair and free shipping to boot. Give them a try.

yup..well a little more after shipping (actually double) but that's still cheap. Best mufflers I ever had, sure ebats the 550$ borlas since they are cheap and sound even more obnoxious.

Go old school, baby. Weld in a pair of glass packs and get chicks. Seriously, though, those are good and cheap and don't restrict flow hardly at all, provided you install them in the correct orientation. (Some of them have louvers inside instead of just holes.)
The downside is they will resonate pretty good at a certain "sweet spot" in engine RPM. That'll vary depending on your car, but it'll probably happen at pretty low RPM--maybe cruising between 35 and 45 MPH in "D" if you have an auto. The workaround is simply to downshift and get the RPMs up.

:jester They're called STRAIGHT PIPES !!!
Seriously, I think some to look at are Purple Hornies (by Holley Mfg.), Thrush from Summit Racing (abt. $28 each), or chambered exhaust from Summit.
Except for Thrush, the others a loud but some like it that way ! :reddevil

Re: Cheap mufflers that sound good... (Jasonty)
hey Jasonty
If you're interested in flowmasters, I have a guy locally that sells any size or type (40, 50's, etc) for $45 each. I've never seen them under $80. I paid $90 each for 50's from some muffler shop and bought the 40's for $45 from this guy. I wanted a bit more sound.
Email or reply if you're interested in the contact info. It's a speed shop, private owner. A couple of forum guys ordered them last fall when I posted to the for sale section. No problems at all that I've heard.
