The Perils of Pauline...ach du lieber...
Went with a friend of mine to an engine builder to pick get my bud's Pontiac Super Duty heads. The owner of the shop tells my bud he has a problem with the 350 block and heads my bud sold him two years ago. The builder decked the block surface and built a potent 350 for another customer in Cleveland...the customer got his project completed...put the 350 in a bike's chassis, went to the state police to get it inspected. The State Troopers called the judge and got an order to seize the bike because the block was tampered and serial number was removed from the engine pad. The guy's attorney now is desperately fighting to save his client's bike from the crusher...never mind there are receipts for everything purchased for the bike, including the motor. This is just insane

That's what's mind boggling...talking to the engine builder, the bike was impounded, not the motor, but the whole bike, and this guy has spend thousands and thousands of $$$$$$. No one seems to be listening to reason, it's apparant the state trooper doesn't want the 350 powered bike on the highway, so he found a way to not only deny the guy the licene tags, but to permanently rid the bike. He had to get a judge to sign off on the order.

Here's a good reason to restamp the block...had that block been restamped, maybe the biker would have gotten the tags, or maybe the trooper would have found something else...who knows, this is just crazy.

Well it should be easy.
Since the bike probably didn't ever have another motor how would the state pooper know what the serial number should be???

That is completely insane. I just don't get it. Sounds to me like that guy needs a good lawyer. I mean after all, in the end the bike will be his, and the state will give him a little $$$ to help pay for it plus pay his legal expenses. There's no way he's gonna end up losing this battle in the long run.

This same problem arose when a close friend completed a cobra kit car and had to submit it to the state police for safety inspection . They required all sorts of chassis and engine donor paper work that he did not realize he needed . Needless to say the car is still not on the road after 11 months ,,,,,, another nitemare indeed !

Years ago I bought a wrecked Firebird that had a salvage title. After restoring the car, I took it to have the safety inspection by a state trooper so that I could get a clean Ohio title. Fortunately, I kept every reciept. The trooper gave the paperwork and the car a thorough going over. He was a very nice guy and very talkative--much unlike many of the Ohio state troopers that I have had the "pleasure" of dealing with out on the road.
Anyway, I asked him about his job as an inspector and why he chose to do this rather than be out on patrol. He told me that he had been a patrol officer for many years and that it had started to get to him. He said he was constantly on guard for any one that he pulled over and the likeliehood that some whacko driver might pull a gun on him and put a bullet in his head. Apparently this had happened to a friend of his recently. He preferred the laid back atmosphere of the inspector's job.
My point is this: Maybe the trooper that impounded your friend's bike should have a bullet put in his head or at least experience the threat of that. It is not the trooper's business to determine if this guy's Boss Hoss should be on the road; just that it complies with safety standards and that nothing used to build it was stolen.
It's one thing to enforce the law, it's quite another to inflict it. I hope your friend prevails. It's jerks like this that wonder why there is often animosity toward the law enforcement community.

Why was the serial number removed? I would think the burden of proof is on the state to prove the the motor was stolen.

I really do not understand the State's case. In Canada the engine block number has not been recorded on vehicle registration/ownership papers for over 30 years. Surely the bill of sale from the builder is adequate confirmation of the legitimacy of the engine??
