Vacuum pumps, can some one shed some light on them?
I was thumbing through Jegs and came across Vacuum pumps.
From what i understand of them is that they suck air out of the crankcase instead of just venting or using a PCV.
Is that correct, and what type of gains would one expect, i wouldn't expect over 3 or 4, definitely not worth the few hundred bucks

I belive that the rings will seal better if theres a good vacuum in the crankcase.

Is it also for those with radical cams who produce insufficient vacuum at idle?
How much are the Swedish ones?

I thought the vaccumn pumps were for cars with radical cams or diesels.
That is why many new trucks/cars have the hydroboost brake systems. This way they are not reliant on vaccumn.

The vacuum pumps you are referring to are for high revving racing engines. They actually create a partial vacuum in the crankcase minimizing friction and windage. Not much use on a street engine though.

You can use a vacuum reserve can, some remove the washer reserve and put the can in that area.

I'm running a 1970 LT1 in my C2 that has been rebuilt with lower compression (11:1 to 10:1) hydraulic lifters - ported, polished, blah blah blah. To bring back the HP we installed a radical cam (don't remember the specs...) so I have like 6 inches of vac - no good for power brakes. I installed a $35.00 vac reservoir from Summit and now I have over 25" of vac according the the gauge on the reservoir. Works great and the engine even idles better.
