Alternator Trouble Shooting Question on a 69?
I still need to do a little more testing but it seems like I'm not getting any voltage from a new alternator I purchased a few years ago when I built the engine for my car. I have not driven the car with it yet but I put a meter on my battery the other day and drove it a little to see if I would get 13.5 volts or so at my battery when I got going at a pretty good speed. The reading I get at my battery on the meter is 12.5 to 12.3 volts no matter what I do as far as RPM or speed. I was thinking about yanking it out and taking it some where to get it tested but I thought I would check to see if you guys have any ideas about what I should look at or check before doing that. Thanks.

I know the two prong plug is notorious for breaking at the base of the wires and can go undected. This from all the vibration. Start there. My .02

GM cars eat a lot of alternators.
The rebuilts look pretty but are even worse. I have gone through 3 or 4 before I got one which would last more than a few months.
The auto parts store will test it. Get a lifetime warranty on a rebuilt.

The car my daughter is driving is 20 years old and has the same alt that it left GM with (1 owner car...Me) and I only rebuilt it once
If your going through altenators you have something wrong or your getting bad rebuilds.

:iagree:
My car has had the same alternator on it since 1975. I keep wishing it would wear out or break so I could justify sending out for a John Pirkle NCRS rebuild :yesnod:

Just fixed the same problem on mine. Rebuilt it same thing low voltage. Pulled it apart again bad bridge rectifier. The one part not in the rebuild kit and not replaced in most rebuilt alternators. Not easy to find alternator parts anymore parts stores dont stock them. Its getting hard to keep your old alternator case. I called every rebuilder in the book until I found one that would sell just the parts.
