Default I Screwed Up...Help!!

While trying to change the lower rag joint with column installed, I put too much upward pressure on the column and the lower bearing blew up sending the ***** rolling onto the garage floor. :mad :cuss Can this lower bearing be changed without pulling the column????

Don't know the answer ... but I can sympathize !!

Patience, beer and a checkbook can solve most anything...

Sure, but you do have to pull the column shaft out a few inches so you can slide the new bearing on. It's a 'tap in' assy and easy to do. Just an FYI though, pulling the shaft out of the column is very easy.

Dont feel too bad, you arent alone. The same thing happened to me a few years ago. Like mentioned above just slide it up enough to get the new bearing on and all will be fine.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll study the Shop Manual to see how the shaft comes out. I might be asking more questions Friday when I have a go at it. :smash: :smash:

Before you take the column out check the required length of the shaft. It is MUCH easier to adjust the length of the steering shaft out of the car then in it. Once you pull it out (carefully) to the length you want then put a hose clamp on to hold it there while you put it in the car. Remove the clamp once you are connected to the rag joint. There are also specs in the AIM whcih show the required measurements of everything on the rag joint. The "rag" should be flat.
