Default topping off rear end oil...need advise please...

i could see where my diff has been "seeping"...not leaking terribly...
so i pulled the plug to check the level...
its about 1/2" below the fill hole...
what i find amazing is that the oil is clear and clean and dosnt have that stink that gear oil gets when its in there for a while...???

anyway...i just want to top it off and go for now as i will be pulling it in the next few months to do a new spring and general rear end overhaul etc...

not knowing what is in there now...what should i use for gear oil and should i add a bottle of GM posi fluid also just to be safe...???
i have some 80-90 amsoil on the shelf...would that be ok???

thanx!

Clear and odor free sounds like it could be synthetic oil in there now, but I'm not familiar with a way you can know for sure without sending a sample off to be tested. Mixing synthetic with mineral based oil would not be the best thing to do either. For the amount of cost involved it might not hurt to pump out as much as you can and fill it with new oil and the posi additive.

:iagree: Though I'd let somebody else do it. Nasty job, and a quickie lube type place will do it cheap (the one I use charges $15 if I bring my own lube). That way you'll know exactly what you've got in there and how long it's been there.

I use mobile 1 gear oil in mine. Synth is magic stuff!

When you do your rear end overhaul, install a drain plug like I had Van Steel put in mine.. No more messy pumps for me :D
