SBC AFR's with Hooker sidemount headers (good & bad)
Well I'm getting ready to install the new 388 into my vette tomorrow and figured I'd do some prefit trials before it's bolted in. One of the things I wasn't positive with was the fit of the Hooker headers with the AFR's since no one here has yet posted their results.
So there is good news & bad news here. The good news is that they are going to work. the bad news is that bubba had to take out his hammer for them to work.
The driver's side fit's great with no clearnace problems to the spark plugs at all :)
Here you can see (I think #4) how close the spark plug is to the header tube. It is impossible to install to remove the plug if the header tube is bolted to the head at this point.
You can also see that you won't be getting any plug wire on that plug as it now sits
This is what it looks like after I worked over the header tube.
Another shot after some :smash:
This is what the headers look like when bolted on :D

Mike- That's worse than sad. I'd send those pictures to Hooker Headers and demand them to jig up something different. It's like a moron placed those pipes running like that.
That's so odd Because my Hooker Super comps work so nice and clear all the parts.

I like the idea of sending the pics to Holley, I never thought of that, though I doubt they'll change anything

Do those heads have raised exhaust ports ?
My Vic Jr. exhaust ports are raised .300 and that puts my # 6 plug right in the centre of one the pipes looks like I'll be doing a little :smash: too
BTW nice looking bullet :D

Re: SBC AFR's with Hooker sidemount headers (MotorHead)
I'm using Trick Flow 23 heads. They have the angle plugs and all my sparkplug boots fit fine. I have one thats about as close as yours after you "modified" it. I can even remove and replace all the plugs with a socket except for #1 that has to be tightend with a wrench
After all the posts I've read about the hooker sipepipe problems I'm seriously begining to wonder if I got a defective pair. They cleared the steering box, all the plugs fit, And I have plenty of clearance under my rocker panels that I didn't have to cut to make them fit.
Surley the 82 isn't that much different than the rest of the C3's?

Re: SBC AFR's with Hooker sidemount headers (EDDIEJ82)
Eddie my Sportman II's fit alright even though the same plug was close to the header tube, I was able to install & remove it with the header in place, with the AFR there was no way I'd be able to do that. I'm guessing it could be a matter of where the head mfg places the spark plug & at what angle in the heads.
It sounds like you got pretty lucky with your set of headers :yesnod:

Man, what bad luck. I have been watching the Forum for a long time concerning fit of AFR's, and Dart Pro 1's with hookers sidepipes. I wonder if the head manufacturers could adjust the angle of the plugs if we sent our headers to them?
Also, would shorty plugs enable one to use those heads, without the :smash:

I think I saw a note from Hooker at some point suggesting that the sidepipe headers may not the be best choice for angle plug heads. Looks like you've proven it. Sucks, man. But they'll work all right. You did a pretty sanitary job.

When your talking about raised port heads. I was really thinking about my Dart 227cc that have .600 raised ports to get the max exhaust flow.
Mike what is the tube size on yours. :) I do see studs on your heads. It's the best thing!

Great pics Mike. Those chrome Hookers look almost black closer to the engine. Glad to hear they'll work. I think Chuck Harmon had to use a little persuasion on his BB Hookers to get them to work too.

Re: SBC AFR's with Hooker sidemount headers (SmokedTires)
I ordered my AFR 210's with straight plugs for this very reason. From what I remember the Hooker Headers (side-mount) came with instructions saying they were designed for a straight-plug head. I have yet to assemble everything so don't know yet how the fit will be...
BTW, no one including AFR stock the straight plug design. Plan on waiting a minimum of two months from order date...or more.

Re: SBC AFR's with Hooker sidemount headers (DMONSVETTE)
Thanks guys. I would assume that the head manufactures place the spark in the optimum location to get the most power from an engine. I'm one for usually going against the grain & figuring out how to make it work (universal fit aluminum radiator, was told it wouldn't work, "why not" I said  ). So even though I wasn't happy about banging the header tube in, it looks like it'll get the job done

Re: SBC AFR's with Hooker sidemount headers (SmokedTires)
what size afr heads... the 180cc are supposed to not be rasied..so they can more easily fit headers..most of the header company always tell me the headers will not fit any raised exaust port

They are the 210 Race Ready heads so they should be similar to the 180cc I would think :)

Re: SBC AFR's with Hooker sidemount headers (SmokedTires)
I called afr and they if I remember correctly said to me that the 180 cc were the only heads that were NOT port raised.. Important for me because ALL the header companys told me they needed non-port raised headers..That's why i'm thinking of building a zz430 clone..using afr 180cc instead of fast burns with the same hot cam from gm

Re: SBC AFR's with Hooker sidemount headers (SmokedTires)
I had a similar issue with my angle plug Darts. The plugs actually point down a little. I had to do that same bend on the #4 plug. I have old 1 3/4" Blackjacks. I also had to clearance the same tube (#2) at the head for stud clearance. Yours is very close too See pic:
