Hadn't seen this before. I was in Sweden when this happened and remember the strontium-90 and cesium-137 scare (rad levels increased in Sweden after the plant blew). Incredible story and the most powerful pictures I've seen of the aftermath. Thanks for posting.

Wow, what a site!!!, I was living in Germany as a Canadian soldier when it all happened, and we had no idea how serious it was, the authorities just told us not to drink milk and not to eat the local veggies. I'v gotten more info on the disaster from her site than from any other source. I will be passing this info to others. WOW.

Thanks Norval,
Very sobering to see the aftermath. The western nuclear reactors were/are far and away more safely secure than the eastern block reactors. Even then, the Chernobyl safety procedures had to be manually overridden in order to have caused the meltdown.
There is also an area in Russia that suffered a nuclear explosion when nuclear waste dumped at a sight reached a critical mass. Also many Russian Navy ships with nuclear reactors lie in the northern Artic rusting away with a very real danger of polluting the waters. I think that the U.S. has been assisting Russia in dismantling some of their nuclear reactors.

Not to mention the huge chemical plants in the northern part of Russia, close to the Finish border. No environmental controls whatsoever and closed off to all media. Some journalists made it in a few years ago and found all vegetation had died in a 20 mile radius of the city.

I think that chick is going to be the mother of a 2headed 3 legged baby someday! She should find something better to do with her idle time, like an on track session with her Ninja. I am for atomic power, it's cheap and leaves more oil for my Vette!

Those are some really powerful pics. What is so scary is that the plant only did what it did because the operators had the plant running at some levels it was not designed to do. They had bypassed the safeties and were trying to see how much power they could get out of it while it was coasting down for a refueling. The plants safeties tried to shut itself down, but the operators were told to keep it going. Now we know the consequences of such actions.
I did a search for Chernobyl pictures a little while back after seeing a show on the History channel. There are some pics out there taken around 1998-1999 from inside of the wreckage. Those are the ones that are really scary. You can see the melted graphite running out of the piping. Really unbelievable that someone would venture back into that place to take some pics and then they are going to die shortly aftereward. If I remember right, the history channel said the sarcophagus(spelling???) is on the verge of collapse any time again.
PS... I work at a nuke and have for the last 13 years.
