76 L82 v/s L48
I just purchased my 76 "L82" vette. Well, it does have the hood emblems and console that says that anyway..... my vin 1Z37L.... is saying an L48 Correct? It should be 1Z37X.... if it were an L82 for real Correct? I can't say it bothers me all that much, as I got this car cheap,($3700.00) and drove it home. It needs a Little interior work, and a fan shroud , as it wants to run a little hot now without it. And Besides... I have always wanted one ever since being old enough to admire my dad's 67 427 hard top convertable (SWEET). What are the true differences between the L48 and L82? Just pistons?
Thanks For tolerating my ignorance.... but I've been reading alot here... and learning ALOT. Thanks to all who post... and all who reply!!!

Yes the X is for L-82. A lot of people put the emblems on there for looks. Some put L-48 emblems on, but they are not original. As for differences in the two internally, I don't know. Externally here are the different parts:
block suffix #
carb
distributor
If you send me the #'s off the above parts plus car options (a/c, auto, trim tag #'s, etc.) I can tell you what you have or should have.

It was very common for owners to do this "back in the day." But in the end, the difference isn't all that important because neither engine had a whole lot of get-up-and-go...at least by today's standards. You'll likely end up dropping a ZZ4 in the engine compartment anyway!

Wow- $3300, is cheap! :yesnod: '76's are not valuable (I have one BTW) but that leaves you some leeway for repairs and mods. Looks like a good price if the car is in decent shape as it looks.

Goto L-82.com. they can tell you most of what you want to know.
That is a very good price.
I just bought mine as well.
I know the cam is different and the intake on a L-82 is aluminum and the L-48 is cast iron.
The heads are different in the L-82 with bigger valves, but; I'm quickly learning that they aren't that great either.
I believe the L-82 is a 4bolt block where the L48 is a 2 bolt.
And as you said the pistons.
I don't know specifically what years had what, but; I believe there is about a 30-40hp difference. Something you could easily make up for with aftermarket parts.
Have fun. . .I know I am.

Re: 76 L82 v/s L48 (79-L-82)
You mentioned this.....
"Well, it does have the hood emblems and console that says that anyway..... my vin 1Z37L.... is saying an L48 Correct? It should be 1Z37X.... if it were an L82 for real Correct?"
Are all years of Corvette L-82's.."1Z37X"? I am assuming the "X" is the identifier for the L-82?

Like I said above, L-82.com has answers to some of the questions above.
I used them when I bought mine.
