Check this ad for a 71 coupe.
This is the actual classified ad out of the paper and some pics I took when I went to look at the car.
MUST SEE
'71 Coupe, 2nd owner. Over $20K invested. Super Nice!
$15,000. Call ###-#####.
I called the guy and he told me that the car has a brand new 355 stoker with dual carbs, new brakes, u-joints and rear end. Brand new=2years ago. Car has been sitting for 2 years, tires are pretty new. Seems like car has not moved in awhile, gas tank has been removed so it can be sand-blasted to
remove rust?? See pics, tank is now sitting on the hood so I could
not open the hood at that time as everyone in the shop was on their
lunch break and the owner of the shop did not want to get involed
with this Vette. He also did not want to talk with me or the owner
of the Vette.??????
Frame looked ok some surface rust. I did not see any real rust damage
or soft spots. Body condition over all was good, bumpers had some rust.
I did not take pics of the rear but that looked good, all Corvette letters
were there and in good condition as were the tail lights.
Owner said car would be out of the shop on Tuesday and able to run.
I don't know how he knows this as it seems like he hasn't spoken to
the shop owner in awhile, 2 years?????
Not gonna hold my breath for this one. Click pic to enlarge
Based on what info you have, how much would you offer??

For $15k it should at least be in running condition. A 355 stoker? Hmm. Be very suspicious of everything and ask for some kind of proof that the things he says were done (like the rear rebuild) can be verified to your satisfaction.
I don't know if he really spent $20k on the car but I doubt it unless he's including the cost of sitting in it swilling bottles of Chevas Regal for the two years he did nothing worthwhile to it.

Sorry I spent $4500 for my vert. Granted it needed paint and interior work but still would not have been worth $15000. I would keep looking. Sounds like to me you might be on the verge of getting into a mess. :yesnod:

paintjob looks fine but the interior would need resto

My guess is there is either an issue of payment due from the owner to the bodyshop or unfinished work (that interior looks kind of half-done).
When I bought my car, the hood was at the bodyshop for re-paint. Long story short, I spent the next month trying to get the bodyshop to shoot the hood. They kept saying too much humidity... I think there was bad blood between the seller and the bodyshop on my car. I wouldn't be so patient next time.
