Are the stock 82 heads any good?
I am thinking of doing a little work to the 82.
I can get a good deal on some Vortec heads, but I was wondering how the stock 82 heads are. It would cut the cost a bunch if I keep my heads.
Would the stock heads with a Comp Cams XE268 cam, Edelbrock Performer, or Performer RPM intake, and a 750 carb give me a decent boost in HP, any guess how much?

stock heads are thin casting, lightweight 76 cc chambered, 160cc intake runner 1,94x1,5 valved smog heads (open chamber) and they are junk heads. The vortecs require a vortec style manifold.

Ya.
I know Vortec heads need a special intake, I have a new Performer RPM intake and some new full roller rockers, but they are not self aligning like I would need with Vortecs.
If I could keep my standard heads, I only need some gaskets, a cam.
With Vortec's I would need some self aligning rockers (or machine for guide plates) and a new intake, plus some money for the heads.

They're not great heads but the mods (that 268 cam is not a high-revver) you propose are not out of line for the flow potential for the heads. You should save yourself a bunch of money and keep what you have. Yes, you can get a bigger boost with good flowing heads, since that's where the power is but it's not like the mods you propose won't make a difference without the heads. If head airflow were the only consideration, you'd pass on the Vortechs and go to AFR 195s. But you did have some concern over cost.

Good luck finding someone who will touch those thin stock heads. I was asking the same questions you are about 2 yrs ago. Our stock heads are performance junk and you'll spend more trying to mod em than just ponying up for a set of new ones. I ended up with AFR.

Perhaps you could find a decent pair of L98 aluminum heads from a late-80's C4. Bolt-on replacement for your stock smog heads.

they are known to crack, they are thin to save weight and are a smog head .i have thought about it too. but i think a good set of aftermarket heads will be money better spent.

L98 heads still don't flow that well. If you are looking for a good head for a good price go with Dart Iron Eagle heads. They have several setups for what type of engine you have and can find them already machined and fully assembled for $750.

I have a set of Iron eagles on my 70 Camaro, it is a nice head, but I built that engine from a bare block. This one I was hoping to get a bit more umph while keeping the cost down. Once the Camaro is finished, then the Vette will have its turn at being the center of my attention :steering:

The crossfire is still on it right now, I was just looking for some extra HP with the stuff I had laying around. If it was worth it to swap the intake and cam with out touching the heads I might have taken it off, but it don't sound like it would help that much with out some heads.
I am trying to stay on track with my 70 Camaro, (but it is hard not to toy with the Vette) I hope to drive it this summer. :steering:

Stock heads = POS = boat anchors = land fill = very large paperweights = couple of $$ from those who don't know better
