1975 wiper well/cowl area sealant
Restoring a 1975 coupe and the area where the wipers store has a sealant that is in bad shape - dried out and cracked. The sealant appears to be a thick, hard substance that was poured in. What is the replacement for this sealant - does the old stuff have to be chipped off prior to restoring new?
Thanks in advance!

I just use an "asphalt base" roof shingle or leak sealer from any hardware store. Comes in a quart can. It's messy and gooey, but it's very if not exactly the same material that GM used. It's too big a job to redo everything-I just use this to fill all the cracks and openings. Have done several cars this way with no problems. :yesnod:

Yep - roof sealer, but I prefer it in a tube.
Also, I use this urethane base sealer ... hardens in a few days, and stays flexible.
Bottom one for sealing ... available at Home Depot.

Thanks!
NHvette - it appears the top tube in the picture is an adhesive - do you use that to seal the well area and then paint it? Does the black tube "flow" to look like the original sealant?
Thanks again!

I used the adhesive (top) for boding the metal to fiberglass areas, plus a bead of
the black sealer, plus a strip of butyl rubber sealer strip, and then rivets to attach.
The black stuff does not really flow at all. It stays put. I did find it easy to
smooth with a rubber glove and a little lacquer thinner.
I'd just clean the area as best you can. Use a small wood chisel to scrape
it out good. Clean up the area best you can and put a wide bead of the roof
sealer around the edges.
While you're in there, check and reseal the seam where the fiberglass rivets
to the bottom of the windshield frame.
Have fun I've been there.
