Default Power Steering moan.

Getting a irritating moan from the power steering at low speed or stopped wheel turning. I'm taking for granted that its the pump. Has anyone rebuilt there original with a kit and how difficult it would be? Would it be better to pick up a rebuilt unit from Autozone and be done with it? A kits $20.00 up, a rebuild with core exchange $60 up.

We just installed two rebuilt power steering pumps into a Chevy conversion van and a Camaro. Both are relatively new but both moaned for the first day or so during the break in period. If yours is moaning and is probably original, you may need a rebuild. The rebuild on most of these older PS components is very easy and can be done in an afternoon. I THINK that Zip has the kits but don't hold me to that. A couple of years ago, I helped my buddy rebuild his 73 PS components - very simple and easy.

I bought mine from Autozone for $70.00 with exchange. No leaks or noise and works fine.

Before doing the rebuild you might try a bottle of Lucas Power Steering fluid. Stopped my moan many years ago and no moaning since.

Thanks guys for info. I'll try the Lucas treatment first then move on to rebuild.
