The GM goodwrench el cheapo 350
What cylinderheads are on this engine?
and is the 250hp rating obtained with the stock exhaust manifold or with headers?
would it take a set of headers nicely?
seems a set of headers and a cam swap would do it wonders.

Def not a high performance eng but can be a great cruiser with a little pep. I stuck a Summit cam (204/214 .424/.444) in mine before I installed it but would go one cam up (214/224 .444/.464) if I had to do it over again. I would also change the head gasket to get little more compression. Really a great value considering the cost.
Not sure if that link is working so here is another link ot the articles:

Those used to be good engines. When you pop a cam and and a set of WP torquers you have a nice 300-325hp motor. I have a 1980 target motor that I'm going to make a 383 out one of these YEARS!

chevy high performance did a whole series on these motors. It is a good foundation to build upon. Its a 4 bolt main block built in mexico. By simply adding more cam and a pair of aluminum heads you can build basically a ZZ4 or ZZ430 only with a flat tappet cam.
this is the motor i have and i added a 208/212 cam for $50 and a pair of 86 vette aluminum heads (basically ZZ4 heads) for $275. Now its a nice little performer sitting at about 330 hp.
P.S. El Cheapo is my middle name. Bubba would be the last. No need to spend a bunch of money if you don't have to! Be carefull camming up this engine without increasing the compression. The heads it comes with are 76 cc. The 86 vette heads are 58 so you get a nice little compression bump as well.

Sounds like a change of cam and headers will do a good job of tooling around town till I build a monster.
It says that its 8.5:1 compression and I expect an XE268 or XE274 would do good. The SDPC kit comes with a performer and edelbrock carb and HEI intake.
Besides I still have aftermarket heads that are pretty much new on my old engine. So I can try my hand at milling and porting if I want.

Re: The GM goodwrench el cheapo 350 (Guru_4_hire)
I put a set of trick flow heads and decent size roller cam in it with good results. I took it 6000 rpms on numerous occassion. I think that if you are going to keep below 6000 rpms and 10/1 comp pression there really is not need to spend a ton of $ on forged parts. I like the vette head configution if shooting for 400 to 450 hp. Since it was so cheap I really bought it as a short term eng that I could use as a back up.

One of these is sitting on my engine stand to go into my '75 in the next few weeks-5yr 50K warranty for $1287!!! It's just going to be a cruiser for me dressed up in my "original" '75 L-82 carb, valve covers, etc. Cast into the bellflange is "HENCHO IN MEXICO" Translated means "Goodluck Mother F'er" :lolg: :lolg: :lolg:

I hear ZZ4 block is also Hencho in Mexico and they have a very good reputation.

I already have headers and the deluxe kit comes with a performer intake and a 600cfm edelbrock carb. I expect with a cam swap I could squeeze 290-300hp out of it. Probably enough to keep me tooling around town.
After I get the brakes fixed of course.

My LM1 El Cheapo, hencho en mexico, has 110K hard miles on it and does not use any oil. Now, what's wrong with that?

Mine runs pretty good, bone stock with headers. 6.2 seconds to 60 is nothing to sneeze at! No stock L-82 could keep up with me if they wanted to.
And my cam barely lifts the valve off the seats...

Edelbrock performer #3701 intake. Distributor set up as per Lars' kit. 17058228 (L-82 A/C) Q-jet.
1 5/8" headers, true dual 2.5" exhaust with dual catalytic converters and Dynomax Ultraflo mufflers.
Engine internals are COMPLETELY stock.
Running a 700R4 w/ 3.55 rear gears.
-Steve
PS - I would not be surprised if I dropped a little ballast and got a better launch to get a 5.9x second 0-60 time. I would definitely be in the 5 second range with a cam.

Re: The GM goodwrench el cheapo 350 (Guru_4_hire)
car craft actually did an article on it, they built it up, made 420 hp with out too much mods.
I think they actually made 300hp, or right around that, with on thier dyno, if i can find the article ill put the information up here

I put one of those in my 72 summer of 02. Headers fit just fine  I believe the heads are 72 cc. One of these days I'll do some mods to it. :steering:
