Fan shroud story
Since "Everyone here owns a 73' " I thought I toss this question out. My Vette (73' of course) cracked its Fan shroud last summer. A bolt got loose and the fan hit it , which in turn did damage to the fan shroud. I did a car show the following week, fan shroud cracked still and the judge said "I see you cracked your fan shroud." I said "yes sir." "Very common for that to happen." he said. "Really?" I replied. So here is my question How many C3 owners here have cracked or damaged their fan shroud before???? Any horror stories with this happening?
By the way I did take home a trophy  (ego  )

Re: Fan shroud story (Macs73)
I had a water pump bearing seize at 6K rpm, the pump shaft promptly sheared off at the pump, so the fan/clutch assy thrashed around and finally came to rest.
Shroud 80% destroyed, and a hole in the rad that you could throw a cat through.
Fortunately, never touched the hood.

When I bought my 73 the lower half of the fan shroud was MIA. Our old friend Bubba had sawed that sucker in half and long ago tossed the bottom portion of it.
When I installed the new one I found out where Bubba's motivation to do such a fool thing had come from, installing the fan shroud in a 73 vette with AC is a PITA.
The shroud would not fit with the radiator in place, so I removed the radiator and tried installing the two as a single unit. That didn't work because the radiator kept hitting the AC condensor. I couldn't get the condensor out because the hood was in the way, and since I was working alone late at night I had no one to help me remove the hood.
I eventually had to un-bolt both of the upper A-arms and push them back out of the way, and I was able to slip the fan shroud into place.

Re: Fan shroud story (Kevin_73)
after a carb replacement my friend and I started up the car, it was idling at 3k rpm because it was previously set for a 454. Well one of the fan blades knocked the shroud, only time it ever happened
Didn't crack it, but gave us a good scare, and this thing just flew out of the engine compartment, we shut her down till we figured out what happened, it was weird

Re: Fan shroud story (73ragtop)
I can't even remember what bolt it was. It had become lose and did not fall out, it just stuck out further then it was suppose to. The fan must had hit it just right to make it "go of track" for a sec. and then hit the shroud. The way I knew something was up was the temp. went up because the it was not cooling correctly. Once I get the vette out of storage I will have a lot to see if I can remember what bolt did the damage. Probably a Gremlin

Re: Fan shroud story (Macs73)
My 69 sat for 13 years in a damp pole barn, when I took the shroud out- with much difficulty- It just seperated. The pressed in nuts that hold the small piece on the bottom of mine just crumbled. My shroud is the one made out plastic. So if yours was like mine that pressed in piece could have come loose. :chevy PS they are a PIA to work on!!!!

Funny that just happed to me the other day. I lost a nice swivel in the engine compartment somewhere. After 20 minutes of looking and probing, I gave up on finding it. Next ride out i think the fan found it. I only broke the smaller round ring that screws on to the main shroud.
BTW I drove through "The only Wanakee in the world" today.

Re: Fan shroud story (DollaGreen)
Lucky I did not see you go by, it would have made me :cry that my vette is in storage. Oh well about 1 week until I bring it out.

I broke mine drag racing. The motor mount let go and the fan hit the shroud.
Me, too. Driver's side motor mount. I've even got a nice little star crack in my hood where the alternator bracket hit it and popped it open. Perfect opportunity and reason to go electric.

Re: Fan shroud story (The Dude)
Mine cracked completely through (center hole to outside) when pulling it out. Damn thing's a pain. I riveted it back together temporarily, I think I'll just leave it until I get electric fans in the future.
