I removed my spare, but kept the cover on - it looks better with it on to me.

I removed the spare and carrier and all hardware. I now carry a can of Fix a Flat. I think it looks better with the cover off. If the rear components have been cleaned up why not show it off.

Didn't have a spare when I got my '69. Just got the dirty carrier handed to me with the rusted hardware on the side.
Now I have a fully refurbed carrier with brand new hardware holding up a correct KH rim and a brand new spare.
Looks just like it did when it rolled of the factory floor ... and more importantly, I can take a 4 hour drive without worrying about finding a flatbed if my can of Fix-a-Flat didn't do the trick.
Besides, if offers protection for your fuel tank against road debris.

There might come a day you'd be glad you had both. I also think it looks much better with than without. :chevy

Since l went to 17" wheels, l ditched my spare, kept the carrier and bought a can of fix a flat and a portable compressor.

:iagree: What about a cooler with a small door big enough for a beer can. Fully stocked with a couple of cases and ice, it would be great crash potection!!!

Actually, the spare tire is suppose to serve the dual purpose of being a safety feature.
It would be between you and whatever might hit you from the rear.

I didn't replace the tire carrier....less weight...plus the look from the rear is ultra    especially if the diff and everything is finely detailed. I have, however placed the carrier in the garage rafters.....
All you need is a couple of cans of tire inflaters, AA card, and make sure your Visa, MC, or AMEX plastic is good.

I bought mine with the spare tire missing. With the tire in there it's noticible but i cranked it up there quite a bit and it looks good. plus the bottom of the carrier is gloss black now. Looks cool.

Took mine out for detailing and never got around to putting it back in. Looks better without IMHO. I did keep the top peice installed to act as a sort of a protective brush guard for the gas tank.
