High School Students Doing Bodywork and Paint?
This is an article from a local newspaper. Would you let high school students under the supervision of a competent instructor do the paint job on your car?

I WAS a high school student when I did the first paint job on my car. That was a long time ago though (20yrs).
Just heading out to the shop right now to continue prepping for the 3rd paint job on it since then.

Ed,
You are a master craftsman but how can you paint a car for $400? The materials alone exceed that sum of money!

I've seen High School kids do some amazing work. Local trade HS, had a show one time to show off the work some of the kids had done, I was blown away.

Why not let the students do the paint job it's better than doing drugs. Someone needs to let them learn. I let my daughter paint my 68 and she did a damn fine job in her first year auto body class. Afterall it's just a Chevy.

If you get a chance....and are in Kansas City towards the end of June, stop in at the National VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America) competition. You will see high school kids doing better work than some of the local garages/body shops, etc. Would I let them do my vette....probably not.....but a metal body daily driver...sure....everyone has to start somewhere...and with a skilled craftsman overseeing the work....no problem.

Sounds like a neat idea. There's a group here in Gainesville, FL called the Dignity Auto Project. They take at risk high school youth and teach them EVERYTHING they need to know to be mechanics - engine work, steering, brakes, trannies, bodywork, you name it. They take donated cars, have the kids fix them like new and then give the cars to needy families in the community. Everyone wins. :hurray:
