base timing on a 1978 mild modified L-82
I just rebuilt the L-82 in my 78 and I am trying to tune the engine now I have added some aftermarket parts such as a 600cfm edelbrock carb, an air gap performer intake, MSD ignition system, and hooker headers with true dual exhaust. Now I am looking to set timing right. It is at 26 degrees BTC base, I’m not sure what total is with mechanical or vacuum. But I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction. I had it down at 20 degrees BTC but it ran horrible. So I guessing I’m close but I really am not sure so any help I can get would be great.

You should be 8-12° advanced for idle with a stock to mild cam. Check your dist weights to make sure they are freely moving and disconnect the vac advance. Then set total advance to 36° at 3000 RPM without vacuum.
