(OT)What's the downside to using Rain-X on your windshield?
My windshield wipers don't work on my '79 (Gee, bet you're all surprised). What are the general feelings about Rain-X? What's the downside to using Rain-X on your windshield? Do the plusses outweigh the minuses?
To use or not to use? What are your recommendations?

I worked for Limo company and the owner put that stuff on the windsheilds and I always had problems seeing at night when it was lightly raining. It appeared that the rainx did not allow the windwipers to completly sweep the water off and left a thin coat on the windsheild that lit up like a light when the headlights of oncoming traffic hit the windsheild. I would get so :mad cuz I could not see a thing. Now we did send them through a car wash A LOT so it may have been the wax spray from the car wash but I stay away from rainx like the plague.

I have used it periodically with no problems. BTW, I also put it on the glass shower stall and it worked great. :)

I have it on my 72 and my daily driver '97 S10. The vette's wiper blades are off because I haven't put new rubber on them, and the S10 has a wiper system that won;t work in the rain. if you apply it as instructed, you will be able to run for a month and then will have to renew. As it wears off it does get hard to see through. I don't use the wipers at all with it exceot to remove mist. The harder it is raining and if your speed is above 45 mph, it will keep all the water blown off your windshield. At night it is best in the dark, on coming car lights or street lights cause a temporary glare if you are not using the wipers or you have worn it down. I like it and seldom run my wipers on the S10, the vette has only been caught in one rain strom and it was no problem to drive about 35 miles with no wipers at all. i think the secret is to not use the wipers at all unless you have to.

I tried it when my wipers were not working my opinion.....I would use it on a shower stall ( thanks for the idea of what to do with the rest of the bottle ) but not on the Vette :D

Wow you guys are tough.
I must admit, when I used the stuff in the bottle, it was really hard to fully clean the glaze off the glass.
But, now I use the RainX washer fluid. No application ... No wiping for an
hour .... just wash the windshield occasionally and it gets treated with the fluid.
I've never had a problem seeing at night because of it (and my eyes suck).
In fact, driving along the contruction riddled Rt3N in the pouring rain last night,
I noted to my self how well the rainX was working. I love it.
Get the jug of washer fluid, not the small bottle that needs rubbing off after application.
If you're not pleased, just stop using it. It wears off in a short time.
I give RainX a 9.5 out of 10. :seeya

Re: (OT)What's the downside to using Rain-X on your windshield? (NHvette)
I have used it for years and it works even better in conjunction with the washer fluid as stated above.
I worked out of a patrol car for years and in wet weather I always relied on Rain-X to keep my visability at premium. I also used it on all of my plastic lens covers ( light bar especially) I use it today to protect all of my plastic lens on my vehicles and my windshields.
It does require maintenance. I would remove all of mine with alcohol and re-apply occasionally if it seemed to get oily from road film.
I was taking a 10-96 (crazy) person to a mental hospital. It was raining cats & dogs and this guy was freaking out because I did not have the wipers on. The water was running up the windshield and over the top of the car. He couldn't figure it out and thought the car was possessed. I had to turn the wipers on to calm him down.
If you have had a bad experiance with it, maybe try it again and go by the directions of application to see if you mis-applied it somehow. I have always had good luck with it. Jim

I keep it on the windsheild of my truck and my wifes car. I drive 30 miles to work at night. If it is raining, I do not use the wiper at all. As for cleaning the haze of the windows when putting it on, I always put Rainx on the window and let it dry for a while. Go back with a damp rag and just polish the window a little and you will be pleased with the results. This is the way I apply it every time.

I've used used it and have had a real problem removing the film it leaves. I wouldn't recommen it.

Save your money. For years I've used Armor-All spray on a damp sponge and wipe the whole windshield down. Then I dry with a towel and enjoy the same benefits at a fraction of the cost. I'll bet if you do a chemical analysis on Rain-X, you'll find it's mostly silicone. Same as Armor-All.
I wipe off the wiper blades to give them a coating, too.

I put Rain-X on the Corvette, Suburban and the Park Ave. It also goes on the boat windshield too.
The only downside is when it's raining and the wife is in the vehicle. She thinks you HAVE to have the wipers on. :banghead: ( It works great, don't need the wipers) :leaving:

Wow I was hoping to be convinced one way or the other!!! This stuff has been out for a long time and the Jury's still out. Maybe I just won't drive in the rain!!! However I'm still convinced my car is posessed, like the guy above.

If your wipers don't work you have 2 choices 1 use rain X and see the road 2 don't use it and you wont be able to see crap! IMO the downfall to rainX is when it washes off you wish it was back on there

Re: (OT)What's the downside to using Rain-X on your windshield? (Love My 72 and 77)
I've used Rain-X on all of my cars for the last 20 years. I agree that the Rain-x washer fluid is a great way to keep a fair amount of it on your windshield in daily drivers without much effort, but you still need wipers at low speed if you are in a mist.
(I bought a Z06 last week and Rain-x was the first thing I did to it, after driving it home in the rain).

Full blown rain storm = WORKING wipers and RAIN-X
To drive in the rain without working wipers is nothing short of stupid! You are putting other driver's lives at risk, even if you don't care about yours.
Light mist/drizzle - RAIN-X

I swear by the stuff! Love it! Put it on the Vette regularly (my wipres work, but like crap).
Overall wet visibility is greatly improved. Contrary to what Chris said, nighttime light-rain stuff is way better than without. I can't stand the cars I get from work that don't have it on them.
The ironinc thing about it is that the harder it ranins and the faster you go, the better it works.

And it's great fro stopping bugs from sticking, and ice scrapes off much easier in the winter when you use it.
