Default Rusty rotors.. can I just sandblast

Got another car I'm working on. Picked up some used rotors from the junkyard cheap. They look pretty good but have some surface rust I'd like to clean up. Can I just shot blast these or would that not be a good idea? I'd like to get around having to pay $120 for a new pair :leaving:

Yeah but you'll have to have them shaved. I'm sure if there rusted they need to be shaved however take it to a shop, they're probably thin anyway.

Not to sound terribly brutish, but the rust will scrape right off the first couple times you hit the brakes. I've seen cars develop spots of rust on their rotors after just sitting a few days (esp. if it's been raining).

Yeah I know that but I want to blast the inside of the rotor as well to clean it up. I can try to be careful to keep the pad surface clean but I figure it might just be easier to do the whole thing.

Yeah the surface rust will go away but i wouldn't put used rotors on my car w/out at least having them cut 1st. Sand blast your rotors, prime them and paint them than take them to a shop and have them cut. Have the shop mic the rotors too. The minimum they can be after being cut is 1215. Any less and you better hold on tight.

i have been able to buy new rotors on ebay for $20 bucks each. They are stamped made in china but have performed well for me. Runout is not a problem.

I bet it cost almost $20 to surface a rotor.

It is only $8 a rotor to have them turned at Autozone.

Not to put it blunt, but the one area that you shouldn't be cutting corners on when performing repairs/maintenance are tires and brakes. Think about it. Just be absolutely certain that you have enough metal there before turning the rotors.

You put "Made in China" rotors on a Corvette?

I think you forgot.

I'm cheap.

But they really have worked out well. Thought i would just pass the info along. Might be a better option than running 25-30 year old rusted out rotors.

No air pumping and i have used them once at Lime Rock so they have been stressed. There's so much metal in C3 rotors i just don't see the need for an expensive or cryro treated rotor.

I replaced the rotors on my 73 a while back with some power slots in an effort to improve my non-power brakes. The original rotors looked so good and with only 40 thousand miles on them, I decided to save them. I bead blasted and painted them (I'll turn them when I decide to use them) then I decided to mic them for good measure. One was right on the limit and the other was just over. If there was ever lots of metal on them, I surely don't know where it went.

When it comes to brakes, buy the best you can afford, it's cheap insurance and you may not get a chance to do it over.

I hope you take off the little 'made in China' sticker they put on everything they make for the US market.
