I'm going to replace the gas tank on my 68, 327 car. Anything to look out for? Helpful hints?

Get more than just the tank. Get the rub strips, the filler neck gasket, and the sender O-ring (if not included with the tank). It's not a very difficult job. Just be sure that the filler hole is centered in the door before you tighten the straps.

Go to home construction site and get some scrap roofing tar paper...same tink wahat's on the vette. :thumbs:

If it's the original tank, be careful taking it down. You my be able to salvage some of the original build sheet. I pulled my tank when my 69 was about 25 years old and a good portion of it was still in tact. Zuti

Yes replace that filler neck gasket as my '74 was all cracked up and over due to replace. I bought a replacement tank because I thought it had greater capacity - not. Same tank. And for 1/2 the price I could have had my original urathane coated and been better off - moisture protected. :yesnod: Most A/C & radiator shops will due this treatment.

I bought everything new.

Definitely get new seals for the neck, and install a new "sock" - the green mess filter on your fuel suction in the tank.

The ONLY real trick is to either re-use your old tank straps OR bend the new ones EXACTLY the same shape as the old ones. If you don't you will have fun....... :smash: :smash: :smash: :smash: :smash: :smash: :cry

Thats it. Easy job. Two people, two hours, two six-packs. Problemo gone.

You're telling me!! I bought new straps for mine and had one HECK of a time getting them in place so I could tighten the bolts down. That was with the body off!! The new straps really fit tight!

Also be careful pulling the old tank out....Mine had the vapor valve on the drivers side...its made out of plastic and since they are VERY hard to find...take care not to damage it ;)

When putting the tank in, "back" the tank into place. That is, tip the front edge of the tank down while lifting the rear edge up and over the rear crossmember it sits on. Then you can easily lift the front edge up into place and install the front crossmember.
