Default When you know you shoulda changed the bearings 100 miles ago...

Awhile back my rear wheel was making a lot of noise. At first I thought it was just parking brake hardware, but when it turned out not to be, I figured it was the bearings and I probably had a few hundred more miles. Not so; as I was driving to my cousin's house, it started snapping and grinding, not very good noises. I pulled the bearing housings off and sent them in to Corvette Mike for new bearings, and this is what they pulled out:

This is from the right rear, most of the rollers are missing, the cage is broken and it looked bone dry. I think from now on I'll grease or replace them every 100k miles or so just to keep them from seizing up on the spindle.

Ouch - GM manual says to grease them every 30K miles IIRC

 Good thing you were able to get it fixed. I'm new to Corvettes - sold my 66 Mustang that I had for 16 years to buy the Vette I'm fixing up now - but I had a front wheel bearing seize up on me in the Stang. It was tightened too much, grease dried up, bearing got hot and welded itself to the spindle! On the highway too. Pain to fix but it got done.

It sounded like my bearings were filled with gravel instead of grease. It's two sides of the same bearing. No other damage, just the broken bearing. Luckily it just smashed itself to peices and didn't seize up on the spindle. I had the shop replace both sides so I won't have to worry about them again for awhile.

The problem is there's no convenient way to grease them without a lot of down time for me. So I figure these ones lasted about 150k miles before they failed, the new ones should be replaced at 100k. But then again, they might not have been the originals, so maybe I'll replace every 50k. :smash:
