HALF SHAFTS 2 1/2 INCH VS 3 INCH ????????
Vetters,
If Iam not mistaken. 63-73 uses 2 1/2 inch. 73-79 uses 3 inch. Question, will a 3 inch shaft fit on a earlier vette that takes a 2 1/2 inch shaft. Are both end of the shaft interchangable with all years, with the only difference just being the diameter of the half shaft?

No problem...they bolt right on. Flanges are the same, ujoints are the same etc. I ran some on my '67 for a long time.

:iagree: 63-79 shafts are all 13 7/8" long from center cap to center cap w/the same u-joints. They shorted them in the 80-82's to 13 1/2".

I have one set of each. I used the fat ones, presuming they are stronger.
Didn't the early years (2 1/2") differ in the ujoint (auto vs standard) ?

Re: HALF SHAFTS 2 1/2 INCH VS 3 INCH ???????? (NHvette)
The larger ones may not be stronger. When I went to a M-20, I had to replace the tranny yoke, rear yoke and driveshaft with an earlier year. Both yokes were smaller than the originals but much heavier. The driveshaft is also smaller and heavier than the original (cast vs forged??).
It seems to me that the stronger pieces would have been used when stock motors pushed 400-500 hp/tq.
Just a thought, anybody else know more about this?
