3.54 gear is in but...
I installed my 3.54 gear on the car today and everything went well. I took it for a road test and it was all good. The engine pick up really fast compare to the 3,07 I was running before. I didn't floored it yet to let the gear break in smoothly.
There only one thing that I'm worried, there's a moderate ''winning'' sound at cruise speed. Will it go away after break in?
Thanks
Stephan
I had to put an Helicoil on the cross-member.

When I was doing my gear change they told me that most non-GM gears would be louder then the originals.

It's a Spicer Dana. Actually, my 3.07 gear made a little bit of sound. It's just that now it's worst. I'll drive it for a couple hundred miles and see what's come out of it.

Cool
It looks great.
Yeah - I find the aluminum in my vette to be worse than the steel.
Any way to put a longer bolt in and back it up on the other side with a washer and nut ?
That would help strengthen the threaded area.
I want to up my torque someday. Maybe 3.73s
:seeya

My 3.73 gears whine alittle. When you are coasting the whine goes away but under acceleration you can here them. They are from Motive Gear. I called them and they said it is possible that they will make some noise. The wear pattern on the gears is within the specs they gave me so I am guessing it is normal. I even had a dealer check them out. Oh well, you get used to it and after ahile you kinda forget about it.

They will always have that whine. It will not go away.
Get a holley electric pump and it will take your mind off the gear whine

For a follow up, I took my car to work today and I noticed that the coasting whine goes away over 50 mph. It's like the frequency is not audible or the surrounding sound is masking it. That's great.
Thanks NHvette, it's the second car I change the rear end ratio and everytime I love the result. The first car, a camaro 1978 went from 2,73 to 3,08. It was a nice change but from 3,07 to 3,54, wow! The car has change his personality. Go for it!
Spider D, the positrac additive is in.
I guess I'll turn the radio on as soon as I take it back from my winter beater. Or even better, next week goes the headers and ultraflow. I guess I won't even hear it anymore.
Norval, thanks but I had my block drill to put a mecanical fuel pump since a 1997 block don't have provision for it. I don't like to hear anything beside my 8 cylinders reving...and some music.:D
Stingraymaniac, yeah I tough of that but.....sorry I'm already doing that. :jester
